I have just learned about Benjamin Perrault's passing. I was standing in the kitchen, getting our kids ready for school and kindergarten when I read Michael Dexter's tweet. I noticed Ben not tweeting much in the last week and was a bit concerned at one point, though not tweeting for a week usually shouldn't mean anything serious. Many of the BSD folks probably know Ben as "the guy running a few thousand Windows Server instances in BHyve", I got to know Ben on Twitter in 2014 and we had very similar interests in FreeBSD and music. I remember tweeting about a new record from a pretty unknown singer-songwriter he posted stuff like "The album is topnotch - I recommend getting it on vinyl", his musical taste was so close to mine, it was scary. We texted a bit back and forth before BSDCan 2015, he generously offered to share his room to me, not having even met me in person. It felt a little weird, but I was sure his offer was sincere and he was looking forward to listening to music with me. Unfortunately, BSDCan 2015 didn't happen for both of us so we first met in person at EuroBSDCon in Stockholm. We shared a table on the first day at dinner and he turned out to be a very open minded and entertaining person. We spent most if not all of the following evenings together, one night drinking erdgeists beer on some ship in Stockholm, ranting about US and German politics, he seemed to have an interesting yet funny somehow outside view on things. We drank the occasional Jagermeister, which for some reason he loved, had lots of Swedish beer and had a great time. He was one of the kindest and most generous and interesting people I got to know in the last years. When thinking about the upcoming BSD conferences in 2016, one of my first thoughts were about checking out Japanese, Canadian and Serbian beer with him. He will be truly missed. :-(
